The work

Careful wallpaper removal and exact pattern placement for specialty papers, murals, and architectural rooms.

Material approach

01Process

From first review to final inspection.

We begin with a project review. Where existing wallpaper is present, we test the removal approach, review the exposed substrate, and define the preparation before mapping a new wallcovering or finish.

  1. 01

Review the existing wallcovering, wall condition, and new finish plan

  2. 02

Remove existing paper and assess the exposed substrate

  3. 03

Prepare the walls and map the pattern or ready for paint surface

  4. 04

Install or complete the specified finish and review it in the room’s light

02Selected wallcoverings

Pattern placed to suit the room.

Murals, scenic papers, quiet textures, and expressive repeats are planned around focal points and corners. We also consider windows, millwork, lighting, and the approach into the room.

03Pattern + junctions

The installation is resolved at every corner and edge.

Closer views show how scale meets the room boundary. They also show pattern continuity through corners and clean transitions into trim.

04Wallpaper removal + preparation

Removal that prepares the wall for what comes next.

Existing wallcoverings, adhesives, liners, and prior repairs do not respond the same way. We work in controlled sections, assess the exposed wall, and define the preparation required for new wallpaper, paint, or a decorative finish.

After removal

Removing paper is not the final preparation step. The underlying wall is reviewed for adhesive residue, unstable coatings, torn facing, and earlier repairs before the next finish system is selected.

Documented before + after

From stripped wall to a full skim coated surface

This documented project sequence shows the wall after existing wallpaper was removed, with adhesive residue and damaged areas exposed, and after the wall received a full skim coat to restore a smooth, continuous surface.

05Installation in progress

The finished wall depends on disciplined sequencing.

Once preparation is complete, we place panels in sequence and confirm continuity at each seam, edge, focal point, and architectural junction.

LocalChicago field notes

Wallcovering planned around architecture and site conditions.

Pattern placement begins before the first panel is hung. We study focal points, wall height, natural light, and the condition of the substrate.

01

Material acclimation

Paper and adhesive are stored and installed within the manufacturer’s stated room conditions. Stable temperature and humidity support clean seams.

02

Historic rooms

Out of square corners and retained trim require a deliberate starting point. Pattern decisions are made in the room.

03

Wallpaper removal

Existing paper, liners, adhesive residue, and prior repairs are assessed after removal. The exposed wall determines the preparation required for paint or new wallcovering.

04

Surface preparation

Walls are corrected and primed for the specified paper. Lining is considered when the wall or material requires it.

05Common questions

What to know about wallpaper installation.

01Do you install designer and hand printed papers?

Yes. We review repeats, dye lots, trimming requirements, and manufacturer notes before installation.

02Do you remove old wallpaper before installing new wallpaper or painting?

Yes. We review the existing paper, liners, adhesive, prior repairs, and wall condition before defining the removal and preparation approach. The exposed wall is assessed before we recommend the next finish.

03How should walls be prepared before wallpaper?

Walls must be sound, smooth, and correctly primed. We specify the preparation around the paper, adhesive, and future removability.

04Can old wallpaper be painted over?

Sometimes, but it is not a default recommendation. Existing paper must be fully bonded, stable, and appropriate for the intended finish. A project review determines whether removal and surface preparation are the better route.

05Can you install murals?

Yes. We establish the focal point and panel sequence before hanging so the composition aligns with the architecture.
